Saying the exact origin of bread is challenging, but archaeological evidence suggests it dates back at least 14,500 years. Early civilizations in the Fertile Crescent, a region encompassing parts of present-day Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Israel, are believed to have been among the first breadmakers.

These early breads were likely flatbreads made from wild grains like einkorn and barley. Over time, cultivation of wheat allowed for the development of more complex doughs and leavening techniques. Egyptians are credited with using yeast for fermentation as early as 3000 BC, leading to lighter and fluffier breads.
