Kunun Zaki Drink

kunu drink is a traditional Nigerian beverage that dates back centuries. Kunu also known as kununzaki is a popular drink consumed throughout Nigeria, mostly in the North.


It is made with either sorghum popularly called dawa, millet or both.

Dawa for kunu

To make kunu, you’ll need the following ingredients:

4 cups of sorghum, 1-2 cups of water, 2 cups of sprout rice, 2cups of dry peeled potatoes, 2-3 tablespoons of ginger, 2 tablespoons of cloves.

To start, soak the sorghum overnight. Next, grind the sorghum, ginger and cloves to form a smooth paste. Also, grind the sprout rice and dry peeled potatoes in another separate container.

Then, in a separate pan, heat the water over medium-high heat. Once the water has boiled, add it into the grinded sorghum container stirring until it thickeneds. add the sprout rice and dry peeled potatoes mixture stirring occasionally for about ten minutes or until the mixture is light.

When the mixtures are well combined, let it sit for 5-6 hours.

Sieve the kunu mixture with a cheesecloth. Your kunu drink is ready, pour it into individual cups or store in the refrigerator, if desired. Enjoy!
